LISA ADAMS: VICISSITUDE OF CIRCUMSTANCE surveys the seductive, shape-shifting psyche within Lisa Adams' haunting, mentally charged paintings. Almost cinematic in their dream-like construction of unexpected narrative and reclusive symbolism, the works document memory in strange and beautiful ways. Meaning unfurls in time lapse, both infused with a sense of rapid-fire immediacy and expansive timelessness. Like Zen koans, implausible questions take precedence over didacticism, urging viewers to forgo rational thought in order to access a deeper intuition. Transmitting informational systems, circumstance, and story with a delicate, yet commanding, organic pulse-- as if through the snap of an electrically charged synapse-- her images resonate within the subconscious and sublime.
With an introduction by Los Angeles writer Ezrha Jean Black and an essay by theatre and art critic James Scarborough who has published works in Apollo, Frieze, Art in America, Flash Art, art+text, New Art Examiner, Art Monthly, The Huffington Post, and Art Press, among other publications.
